Owning a pet is a huge responsibility, especially if you have a dog. Unlike some more independent furry companions, dogs need lots of love, care and attention. If you have a very busy schedule, you might feel like you don’t have enough time to devote to your dog, but that may not be the case. Different breeds of dog have different personalities, so you may be able to find a pet that fits your personality as well as your schedule. Here are some suggestions for the best dogs for different types of lifestyles.

Do you love the outdoors?

If this sounds like you, then you may want a pet who shares your passion for nature. Just about every dog loves going out for its daily walk, but there are some breeds who love vigorous exercise. If you enjoy running and hiking, a medium-large dog, including Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, and most pointers, will be the best match for you.

Do you have kids?

Just about every breed of dog can be a great companion for your child, but there are a few that are exceptionally kid-friendly. Beagles and boxers are great for younger children who want to play. Labrador retrievers and Saint Bernards are friendly and lovable and are great for kids of any age.

Are you very busy?

If you have a lot on your plate, you might feel like you don’t have the time to devote to your dog, but there are several breeds that are very independent and don’t mind a little alone time. If you are always out and about, consider an Alaskan malamute or a Chinese Shar-Pei. Alternatively, if you don’t have enough time to spend with your dog, have two dogs so that they always have a companion when you’re not around.

Are you a homebody?

If you find that you don’t leave the house much, you might want a dog that craves love and attention. Some dogs that crave and thrive on human attention are Pomeranians and toy poodles. Other dogs that love companionship, but aren’t as needy are beagles and cocker spaniels.
