What should you buy before adopting a dog?FamilyPet
So you’re thinking about adding a new dog to your family, and you’re wondering what you’ll need to buy. There are a number of different things you will likely need to before your new dog comes home. Let’s take a look at a few items your home will definitely require before you greet your canine companion:
The first things you’ll need are water and food bowls—the size will depend on the breed of dog you intend to adopt. There are a many kinds of bowls on the market. You can buy separate bowls, or you can buy them attached together. The choice is yours, as the dog will not care as long as they are both kept full.
It’s also beneficial to buy a bed before you bring the dog home. Again, the size you buy will depend on the size of the dog you’re adopting. There are myriad beds available at any online or local pet store; even Wal-Mart, Costco and Target carry dog beds.
It is also a good idea to buy some dog toys before you bring your dog home. A good rope or squeaky toy will make any dog happy. However, not all dogs will play with toys. You won’t know if your dog likes toys or not until he comes home, unless you adopt him from a foster home or a rescue. A foster parent can fill you in on the likes and dislikes of your dog before you adopt him. This would give you good insight into which toys to purchase for your new dog to make him feel most comfortable.
Another item you can purchase is treats. Most dogs will eat a variety of treats. Some dogs, however, can be picky eaters. It can be hard to tell what your new dog will like, but with a little time and some trial and error, you’ll catch on quickly enough.
Food bowls, water bowls, dog beds, toys and treats are just examples of things you can buy before your dog comes to live with you. Things like leashes, collars and clothing needs to be purchased after you get to know him. Remember that all dogs have personalities, just like people, and they will have their own likes and dislikes. Don’t be discouraged if your new dog dislikes something you purchase for him initially.
