A cat behavior expert with more than 15 years experience, Jackson Galaxy specializes in helping individuals whose “out of control” cats are turning their lives and homes upside down. He does so by focusing on the connection between physical and behavioral feline health. A unique presence in the pet psychology world, Galaxy’s mission is to keep cats out of the shelters and off the streets, and to prevent them from being euthanized.
It’s a pretty interesting story about how this musician, songwriter and actor–complete with his rock ‘n roll style and tattooed arms– evolved into one of the nation’s foremost cat behavior experts with the self-proclaimed title of Cat Daddy. It’s even more fascinating how he uses his creativity to help him rehabilitate stray and surrendered cats.

Nearly two decades ago, Galaxy worked in an animal shelter. One night, during a particularly violent storm, he heard the cats screaming. He wanted to calm them down, and once heard that a slow blink from a cat means, “I love you,” while slow blinks between a cat and human establishes a link between the two.

He tried it, hoping it might quiet and reassure a few of the cats, and 45 minutes later, the cats were all sleeping peacefully.

“Working in an animal shelter grounded me in the current reality of animal overpopulation and convinced me simultaneously of the promise of a no-kill country. We can achieve, in my lifetime, a world where homeless animals do not have to die needlessly,” he states on his website.

In the early 2000s, Jackson went into private practice in Boulder, Colo., founding Little Big Cat, Inc. with holistic veterinarian Dr. Jean Hofve. Together, they gave mind-body consultations to cat guardians, focusing on the connection between physical and behavioral feline health.
In 2007, Jackson moved to Los Angeles and, today, has continued his private feline consulting practice, as well as teaching to veterinary students, volunteers and shelter workers. He is also author of the book, Cat Daddy: What the World’s Most Incorrigible Cat Taught Me About Life, Love, and Coming Clean.
