If you’re looking for a furry addition to your family, you should take a look in your local animal shelter.

Adopting from a shelter is a great community service. A shelter helps keep your streets free of stray animals. Strays cause all nature of problems, ranging from car accidents (drivers avoiding hitting an animal), to dog bites, to the spread of diseases. In most states, shelters only hold stray animals for seven days, which means that when you adopt, you can know that you’re saving the life of an animal that would otherwise be put down. It also means that you’re making room for another dog.

A shelter provides a wide variety of dogs to choose from. Whether picked up off the street or dumped there by former owners, there are many purebred dogs living in shelters (not just mutts), and dogs of all ages (puppies included).

The shelter staff should be able to give you a good idea of the personality of each dog, which means you won’t be adopting blindly. You do need to consider what your lifestyle entails before you pick a dog based on looks alone. Make sure to ask the staff many questions about a dog before choosing her. You’ll want to make sure she’s a good addition to your home. Adopting a dog should never be taken lightly. This is a life-long commitment, so be sure to make a wise choice.
