What are the dangers of serving raw eggs to my cat?

Feeding your cat the occasional raw egg shouldn’t be too detrimental, however, there are a few dangers that cat owners should be aware of.

The first concern is that a lot of eggs may have been exposed to harmful bacteria such as E. coli or salmonella during the course of their processing. These two bacteria can lead to terrible food poisoning in cats, just like in humans.

Another concern associated with feeding raw eggs to cats is that there is a specific protein called Avidin that is found in the whites of raw eggs. This protein interferes with your cat’s ability to absorb vitamin B; if a cat has a vitamin B deficiency, it can lead to a host of skin and coat concerns.

Aside from the risk of exposure to salmonella and E. coli, there are no known risks or dangers involved with feeding your cat egg yolks. Cats should never be allowed to eat eggshells because the sharp pieces could do damage to their intestinal tract if swallowed.

There are many other food items that you should avoid feeding your cat. For example, onions, garlic, chives, avocados, and macadamia nuts can all be potentially toxic to your cat.
