What are common food allergies for cats?

Food allergies are less common in cats than they are in dogs. However, it is still very possible to see food allergies cropping up in your feline. Here are a few common food allergies of which owners should be aware:

  • Wheat
  • Soy
  • Corn
  • Fish
  • Chicken
  • Beef
  • Pork
  • Eggs
  • Dairy

Some cats are born with allergies, while others develop them over time. There are several signs and symptoms of food allergies in cats, which may include the following:

  • Hair loss
  • Itchy ears
  • Reoccurring ear infections
  • Itchy skin
  • Sores on the skin from scratching
  • Discharge from the eyes and nose
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

If you suspect a food allergy in your cat, consult your veterinarian as soon as possible. Your vet will likely prescribe an antihistamine, and may even offer a round of steroids to help ease your cat’s discomfort. Your vet will also likely recommend a modified diet for your allergic cat.

Starting your cat on a low-allergen cat food is the best form of long-term treatment. This  food should be offered for at least a month. Your vet may then recommend the slow introduction of simple foods, like ground beef or chicken breast.

Food allergies can be very irritating to your cat, so it’s important that you do your utmost to help improve her level of comfort. Avoid feeding her foods that include grains, dairy products, eggs, and other commercial foods that may aggravate her allergies.
