Artist’s Big Bushy Cats Are An Internet Phenomenon
Richard Saunders likes to keep his kitties trim. He likes them green and leafy, too.
If you’ve seen one of Saunders’s cats, you’d likely remember. While they don’t make much noise, some appear to stand over 10 feet tall. A giant topiary feline populates the British artist’s painted lakeside menagerie, while others dwell in more modest pottings. Meanwhile, images of the artworks have been shared all over social media, both with and without the artist’s name.
Ever wondered what it would be like to be a mouse? A daydream wander through Saunders’s fictional garden will give you a good picture.
His paintings are so realistic, they’ve fooled many into believing these feline fantasy gardens really exist!
Saunders’s work has been seen by millions across the world, and it’s tickled his green thumb pink, for better or for worse.
“It went to Japan, America, it went to Singapore, Portugal, Norway, all over the world!” he said in a video interview. “I’m not used to this sort of publicity, and I wasn’t expecting it, and I didn’t ask for it.”
If Saunders was hoping his cats would enjoy seclusion, he’s been sorely mistaken. The Topiary Cat’s Facebook page has tens of thousands of followers, all smitten with the verdant feline artworks.
Sadly, the muse for Saunders’s paintings, a Russian Blue named Tolly, died in February 2016. Saunders considered ending his work with topiary cats after the loss of his furry friend, until an outpouring of online support convinced him otherwise.
“Many have said how I’ve helped them when their furry friends have died and gone over the rainbow bridge,” Saunders said.
