Retired State Rep’s Photo Of Three-Antlered Deer, ‘A One-In-A-Million Thing’

Former Michigan State Representative Steven Lindberg has been trying to upload a new photo to Facebook every day since he made a New Year’s Resolution in 2013. The 75-year-old enjoys taking photos in the woods near his home in Marquette, Mich., while he walks with his Shih Tzu-bichon frise mix, Max.

Most days, the scenery is what one would expect from a forest in northern Michigan.

“It’s kind of hard to find something different to take a picture of,” he told MSN. “Then, I spotted this deer.”

Lindberg tried to capture the white-tailed deer in a photo, another common sight in the Mitten State.

“I was moving around trying to get a better perspective of him,” he said. “If I got too close to her, he wasn’t too happy.”

He got the shot, but upon further inspection, noticed this was no ordinary deer. After his walk, Lindberg uploaded the image to his computer where he saw the animal had three distinct antlers growing out of its head.

Lindberg posted the photo to Facebook, sticking to his resolution, where it drew much more attention. The image was shared thousands of times, and generated questions from viewers around the world. The Detroit Free Press, The Washington Post, and local news channels even contacted the retired State Rep to hear more of the story.

“I take a picture of a deer, and it goes wild,” he said.

“Five days before rifle season for Whitetail Deer and look who I get to see, along with his girlfriend,” Lindberg posted to Facebook. “A three antlered, nine or twelve point buck (depending if you want to count the two little tines on the right antler, and the small tine on the left antler).”

While many of Lindberg’s followers were amazed by the unusual animal, a few cynical individuals wanted proof that the image wasn’t edited.

Lindberg was happy to provide another photo, “just to dispel any photoshop rumors.”

“This buck looks totally healthy, and the buck is normal,” Dr. Steve Edwards of Lakeview Animal Clinic in Lakeview told the Detroit Free Press. “A normal, healthy, good-looking buck. But, yes, there are two antlers coming out one side. Of course, these are antlers — not horns.”

Lindberg’s photo continues to generate attention, and praise:

“I guess with three antlers, you could get more bang from your buck.”
