Stray Kitten Turns Up For Dinner, Decides To Move In
Adam Laigo has always wanted a pet. So when a Calico stray wandered into his northern California home while he was hosting a dinner party, the uninvited dinner guest wasn’t treated like a party crasher. The kitten’s sudden appearance felt much more like fate.
“I was making food when one of my roommates said, ‘hey, there’s a cat here,’” Laigo told Love Meow. “I peeked around the corner and she was cautiously making her way a few feet into the door, sniffing the ground while keeping a watchful eye on us.”
The kitten proceeded to shyly investigated Laigo’s house, but suddenly got scared and fled back outside. “I couldn’t just let a stray kitten that came in, go back out, if I had the chance to help,” said Laigo, who followed the kitten into the yard with a spare can of tuna.
Ultimately, the offer of tuna convinced the hungry cat that this human came in peace. She followed Laigo back into the kitchen, where she wolfed the food down. Nor was this hungry kitten content to dine and dash. After filling her belly, the cat came back around to say thanks.
“I gave her a shower after seeing how many fleas she had,” Laigo recalled of the cat he’d come to call Tuna. “That night, she slept in my bed, and every night since then.”
The following day, Laigo took the young cat — whom he’d come to call Tuna — to the vet, who searched for worms, parasites, fleas, and a microchip. When they couldn’t find anything, Laigo knew Tuna was meant to be part of his family.
“Tuna has chosen her forever home,” he said. “And she’s teaching me how much energy one little gal can fit in to the few hours she’s awake each day.”
And though she was initially shy when she first stopped by for dinner, the young cat has since come out of her shell. Sometimes, Tuna is cuddly and calm. Other times, she’s a bundle of energy. “She loves climbing around on the forts I made out of boxes, but her favorite thing to do is definitely playing fetch with her catnip mice,” said Laigo, who has already taught Tuna to walk on a lead.
“The stray kitten is gone and the new and improved happy-go-lucky kitten with a family is here,” he said, recalling his lifelong ambition of owning a pet. “She’s really been nothing short of a dream.”
