BREAKING NEWS: Smallbatch Pets Inc. of California has announced a voluntary recall of one lot of its frozen duckbatch sliders for dogs, which may be contaminated by salmonella and listeria monocytogenes.

Untreated, a Listeria infection in a dog can result in paralysis and in swelling of the brain..

The affected products were distributed between February 23rd, 2016 and March 10th, 2016 to retail pet food stores in California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington. A full list of Smallbatch retailers within these states (as well as other states) can be found here.

Why was it recalled?

This recall was initiated after routine testing by the FDA. While no health issues have been reported, dogs ingesting the food, fellow pets sharing the home, and the people handling the contaminated food are all at risk of these foodborne illnesses. Further, dogs can shed the bacteria from their fur, and onto flooring or furniture. In humans and in dogs, the effects of salmonella and listeria can be detrimental.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms found in dogs:

  • Lethargic
  • Diarrhea
  • Bloody Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Decreased Appetite
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Excessive Drooling

As mentioned, if left untreated, a Listeria infection in a dog can result in paralysis and in swelling of the brain. Some dogs may not feel any of these symptoms. However, they can still be carriers and infect other animals or humans.

Symptoms found in people:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Abdominal Cramps
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Muscle Aches
