SeaWorld has announced that it would cease all of its orca breeding programs for the company’s nearly 30 whales. This makes the current group the last generation of SeaWorld’s orcas. They will keep those in captivity because they would not be able to survive on their own in the wild, but they will not be bred. The Humane Society of the United States has worked hard with SeaWorld on these new policies, and say this is “a major step forward toward a humane economy in which corporations respond and adapt to public concerns over animal welfare.”

Along with ceasing breeding, SeaWorld will also stop their theatrical orca shows. They said that they will turns their attention to “new, inspiring, natural orca encounters” with educational programs emphasizing enrichment, exercise and health with its remaining killer whales. They will continue to receive the highest-quality care but will not have to endure the stress from performing in shows or being bred any longer.
