Dog Rescue Stories: Pippen’s Foster Mom Knew She Was the One

Courtney started fostering and volunteering with Wags and Walks in Los Angeles as a way to get her “dog fix” while juggling a busy work and travel schedule. She knew she couldn’t commit to a dog long term, so fostering was the perfect alternative solution…or so she thought. That’s when Pippen came into her life.

Courtney had just gotten back to town and was planning to foster for a week before leaving for two weeks for work. She went to the office to pick up a ten month old puppy named Pepita. They knew she would be adopted very quickly. She was incredibly shy and nervous around new people, especially men, but she and Courtney instantly connected. During the car ride home, she was quiet, but comfortable. Courtney was excited to have such a sweet dog.

It didn’t take long for Courtney to realize how special this pup was. You would have never guessed she was under a year old. She had this maturity to her personality, yet was still playful and fun, once she was comfortable. The more time Courtney spent with her, the more she realized that Pippen was exactly the type of dog that she wanted in her life.

Courtney started toying with the idea of keeping her, but with her long trip approaching, she didn’t think it would be possible. While she was having this mental deliberation, there were multiple applications being submitted for Pippen. They were scheduling Meet and Greets to meet her potential adopters and then, something happened to Courtney.

She could not shake the idea of saying goodbye. Her boyfriend was out of town that weekend, and she was building the perfect case towards why they should keep her. Unfortunately, he had not spent too much time with Pippen, and when he did, she was terrified of him. Needless to say, he was not thrilled about the idea of welcoming a dog into their lives long-term, especially when they had not bonded at all. It took a lot of convincing – not just with him, but with Courtney herself, too. Was she actually ready for the commitment of a dog? Eventually, she realized that her life wouldn’t be the same if she had to give Pippen to another adopter, and that’s when she knew she had to foster fail.

The first month was not easy! Courtney was out of town for two weeks and had this brand new furbaby. She had to find someone to watch her while she was gone. It was challenging to say goodbye, but she knew it was only temporary. They met a great dog sitter who helped her overcome some of her fears. She has a dog who Pippen bonded with very quickly. She gained confidence, played a lot, spent time with a man, and so much more.

It took some time for Pippen to completely establish her relationship with Courtney’s boyfriend, but now they are inseparable! When he’s around, she pays absolutely no attention to her forever mom! Each day, her personality shows a little more. Some of her favorite activities include: running around at the beach, visiting the dog park, seeing her best dog friends, and going on long walks. She just had her first plane ride to visit Chicago! They are hoping to take her on more trips in the future.

Pippen’s forever parents’ lives have changed for the better because of her! She’s the best companion and Courtney was so happy that she said yes to keeping her. She’s proud to be a Foster Failure!
