Pig Ear Dog Treats Recalled In 33 States Due To Salmonella
The CDC provided an update on the investigation and posted:
“As of July 17, 2019, a total of 93 people infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella have been reported from 27 states.
Illnesses started on dates ranging from October 1, 2018 to June 20, 2019. Ill people range in age from less than 1 year to 90 years, with a median age of 38 years. No deaths have been reported.
Illnesses might not yet be reported due to the time it takes between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported. This takes an average of 2 to 4 weeks.”
On July 3, 2019, Pet Supplies Plus recalled bulk pig ears supplied to over 400 stores in 33 states due to a possible Salmonella contamination.
Mayo Clinic defines Salmonella as, “a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract. Salmonella bacteria typically live in animal and human intestines and are shed through feces.”
“Testing by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development revealed that aging bulk pig ear product in one of Pet Supplies Plus stores tested positive for Salmonella,” reports Dog Food Advisor.
What Is Recalled?
Bulk pig ear dog treats sold in open bins. Prepackaged branded pig ears are not included in this recall.
The company has removed the product from shelves and is working with the FDA to find what caused the Salmonella outbreak.
The states included in the recall were :
