BREAKING NEWS: Major Pet Food Brand Recalls Food After Vitamin D Toxicity In 3 DogsMatthew Russell
Nutrisca of Saint Louis, Missouri, has voluntarily recalled one formula of Nutrisca dry dog food due to elevated levels of vitamin D.
Complaints from at least three different pet owners have prompted the recall. In each case, dogs suffered from Vitamin D toxicity after eating the product.
The Nutrisca recall joins a growing number of others for the year of 2018.
What Is Recalled?
According to the recall statement, the following products are being recalled:

|15 lbs NutriscaÂ® Chicken and Chickpea Dry Dog Food||Bag UPC: 8-84244-12795-8|
|28 lbs NutriscaÂ® Chicken and Chickpea Dry Dog Food||Bag UPC: 8-84244-12895-5|
Bags affected by this recall have a Best By Date code of February 25, 2020 through September 13, 2020 printed on the back or bottom of each bag.
Where was it sold?
These three sizes of Nutrisca Chicken and Chickpea Dry Dog Food products were distributed to retail stores nationwide.
No other Nutrisca products, including Nutrisca Chicken & Chickpea wet dog foods are being recalled. The FDA firms that all other Nutrisca dog and cat food products are safe to feed to pets.
Symptoms of Vitamin D toxicity
Dogs ingesting elevated levels of Vitamin D may exhibit symptoms such as:
- loss of appetite
- increased thirst
- increased urination
- excessive drooling
- weight loss
Vitamin D when consumed at very high levels can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction.
What should you do?
According to the FDA, pet owners than those caring for pets should stop feeding the products listed above immediately. Consumers with dogs who have consumed any of the products listed above and are exhibiting these symptoms, should contact their veterinarian.
