Nordstrom Bans Sale Of Fur And Exotic Animal Skins

Nordstrom has just announced they will stop selling products made from animal fur and exotic skins by the end of 2021.

On Tuesday, Nordstrom introduced their new policy which will extend to all store locations and Nordstrom’s e-commerce sites. The fashion retailer joined The Humane Society of the United States’ fur-free movement and made the commitment to ban animal fur and exotic skins after listening to customer feedback.

“As a leading fashion retailer, we’re committed to delivering the best possible service and merchandise for our customers. Delivering on that commitment means continually listening to customer feedback and evolving our product offering to ensure we’re meeting their needs,” Teri Bariquit, chief merchandising officer at Nordstrom said. “Our private label brands haven’t used these materials for years, so extending this policy to all the brands we carry is a natural next step for our business.”

300 brands and retailers have adopted fur-free policies, but Nordstrom is the first US-based fashion retailer to ban exotic animal skins as well as animal fur.

The new policy states, “Our exotic animal skin policy includes any animal skin or leather not derived from cow/calf, sheep/lamb, pig, goat or water buffalo. This includes (but is not limited to): lizard, snake, python, alligator, crocodile, ostrich, shark, kangaroo and stingray. We will continue to ban products that contain materials from vulnerable or endangered species, including bone, horn, shells and teeth.”

Kitty Block, the president and CEO of HSUS, said in a statement, “This is a pivotal step toward a more humane business model and a safer world for animals, sending a clear message that animals should not suffer for the sake of fashion. Nordstrom’s decision will surely have a ripple effect on other influential fashion leaders.”

While this is a major victory for animals and will spare countless animals, HSUS will not stop until all fur-bearing animals are protected. “We’re fighting to make compassion the new fashion.”
