Australian dog trainer and former surfing champion Chris de Aboitiz uses the discipline of surfing as a way of teaching people to build healthy relationships with their furry best friends. On the outskirts of Sydney, Aboitiz takes his pups out to surf. He has been doing this with dogs for nearly ten years and believes it’s a great way to understand them and their behavior.

He travels up and down the Australian east coast with his four dogs, which he rescued from shelters, teaching people and encouraging them to do the same. He says he’s gotten a positive response from dog owners. “So many dogs are given away because people don’t have control, their dog turns from an asset to a liability,” he told Reuters. “The ultimate result is to have less dogs euthanised.” He says training the dog is the easy part, but you also need to train the owner.
