Hundreds Of Strays Gathered On A Grassy Hill. When I Learned Why, Jaw-Dropping!
Territorio de Zaguates, or “Land of the Strays” is a privately funded, volunteer-run organization in Costa Rica. Every dog that lives here is available for adoption. Each dog is given a name and also assigned their own personal “breed” based on their unique characteristics. At this shelter, mutts are celebrated for their unique traits to help dispel the myth that purebreds are more valuable.
To continue this effort, a popular Costa Rican television show featured drawings of these “breeds” and they became social media sensations. The Alaskan Collie Fluffyterrier, Chubby-Tailed German Doubernauzer, and the Fire-Tailed Border Cocker, are just a few of the many. Along with these drawings, billboards and ads spread the message, “When you adopt a mutt, you adopt a unique breed.” This spiked interest amongst the community and many people were visiting this shelter and adopting the pups.
Volunteers at Land of the Strays exercise the dogs by going on scenic hikes with them. Interested adopters are more than welcome to join them on the hike to get to know the different dogs. The dogs enjoy playing outside, but they also have an indoor facility where they have comfortable beds, as well as feeding and bathing stations. Water fountains are also spread out all over the property for the dogs to drink from as they please. You can see some of these pups on their Facebook page.
