Labs Named Most Popular Dog Breed For 28th Consecutive Year

Labs are loyal, intelligent and great with children – maybe that is why they were named the most popular dog breed for the 28th consecutive year.

While we think all dogs are amazing, the general public around the world seems to gravitate towards Labrador Retrievers. They hold the record for most popular dog, with the poodle winning for 22 consecutive years in the 20th century.

The breed is a top choice for search and rescue work, guide dogs, assisted living dogs, and contraband detection work, according to Animal Planet.

The 2018 top 10 most popular dog breeds list by American Kennel Club is comprised of the same breeds as 2017. The ranks are based on AKC registrations.

2018 Top 10 Dog Breeds:

1. Labrador retriever

2. German shepherd Dog

3. Golden retriever

4. French bulldog

5. Bulldog

6. Beagle

7. Poodle

8. Rottweiler

9. German Shorthaired pointer

10. Yorkshire terrier

However, our list would have the same dog for 1-10, and that would be a rescue dog. There are multiple lab rescue groups that have adoptable dogs if you are looking to add one to your family. Please remember to adopt not shop!

“Sure, they’re one of America’s favorite breeds, but when people adopt a puppy and the dog starts to display that ‘Lab energy,’ chews up someone’s shoes, or takes up too much time, they sometimes get dumped at a shelter,” states Lucky Lab Rescue.

They went on to say, “Some perfectly great dogs end up at shelters because their family moved, had a baby, got divorced, or someone lost their job.”

Breed does not matter because in the end all dogs offer unconditional love and companionship. While finding the perfect match for your family is important, the right dog is waiting at your local shelter.
