He Plucked Out All Of His Feathers Due To Anxiety. But Now He Dances His Way Through His New LifeAshley Maisano
A Ducorp’s cockatoo, named King O, lost his favorite human when she passed away. King O lived with her for about three years before she died. He then went to live with his late owner’s nephew, who didn’t know much about taking care of birds. His lack of knowledge led King O down a sad path. He was locked in a room, in his cage with no toys or human interaction—a life he was not used to in the slightest bit.
This new life without his beloved human brought King O fear, stress and grief, which led to him plucking all of his feathers out—a sign of anxiety in birds. From there, he went to live with a young woman, who he got along great with, but then had to get re-homed yet again when the woman lost her house.
The people who took King O were friends of the previous woman. He lived with them for years, but still showed signs of behavior issues due to his past, that left the couple concerned. They then reached out to an online parrot support group to seek advice. A group called Parrot Garden in Utah offered to take him in.
It didn’t take long for the staff there to get to know King O. They quickly learned that he was a very extroverted bird who sought constant attention. Unlike most parrots, who usually take time to build relationships with people, King O loves meeting new people and warms up to them fast.
King O is now 16 years old and is a handful to take care of, but he was definitely in the right hands at Parrot Garden. He doesn’t do well in a cage, doesn’t like other birds, and needs constant stimulation. One thing he loves to do is sing and dance. Staffers took turns having dance parties with him to keep him happy.
After six years at Parrot Garden, King O has finally found a forever home! His new human is an experienced bird owner who also runs a school education program and a private reserve, where he will have the opportunity to meet a ton of new people.
Before King O left for his new home, the staff at Parrot Garden threw him a big going away party, which included lots of singing and dancing of course! King O has had a difficult life and had bounced around from home to home, but he never lost his love for people. Now he will have a permanent home to live out the rest of his life, dancing and having a great time!
