These Kids Read Stories To Shelter Dogs…The Reason Why? Totally Amazing!Ashley Maisano
This past December, kids took part in a reading event at the Humane Society of Missouri. They read stories to the shelter pets there, made greeting cards for adoptable animals’ kennels, and sipped on hot chocolate and munched on some cookies. This reading event was part of The Shelter Buddies Reading Program which was founded to help the shelter dogs become more adoptable, while helping the children practice their reading skills.
The kids sit outside of the kennels and read to them, which helps shy and nervous dogs to relax around people and energetic dogs to be more calm. In the video below, you can watch the children reading to them and you’ll notice that some of the dogs are even listening like they understand the story. This is a great idea and helps both parties involved. The shelter plans to expand the reading program to all of the Humane Society of Missouri’s shelters, and also to cats as well!
