Orphaned Goat Injured After Walking Through Fire Has Uphill Battle AheadAshley Maisano
A baby goat, now named Janice, lost her mom when she was just a day or two old. It’s unknown exactly what happened to her mom, but Janice wound up wandering onto a campsite all alone. The people at the campsite had seen feral goats in the area before, so they didn’t want to interfere with Janice in case her mom was looking for her.
Days later, Janice was still there with no mom in sight, so the people decided to help. They called around until they finally found someone who was willing to help and adopt this poor baby goat. The woman had never had a goat before, but she wanted to give her a second chance and hopefully make her life better.
The goat was just four pounds, she still had her umbilical cord attached, and she was starving. Other than that, she seemed like a normal baby goat.
Little did she know that this little goat was injured. When she first got her, she seemed fine. But then she realized that the goat was having a hard time walking. Then she looked at her hooves and noticed that they were burnt, along with her legs.
It turns out that Janice most likely jumped into the fire pit at the campsite she was at while searching for warmth. Thankfully, her whole body wasn’t burned, but she was still in a lot of pain.
Her mom brought her to the vet immediately upon discovering her injuries. The vet wasn’t even too optimistic that Janice would make it, but her mom refused to give up on her. They wrapped her paws and treated them accordingly. She wound up losing two of them and the other two were deformed. She also lost the tip of one of her ears.
Her mom did such a great job taking care of her. She spent as much time as possible with her and even carried her everywhere. But when she had to leave the house, Janice had a great babysitter: her new cat brother, Joey.
Joey and Janice formed a very special bond and grew to be inseparable. Joey always stayed by Janice’s side; it’s like he knew that Janice was going through tough times. With Joey and her mom’s help, along with the rest of her family, Janice got stronger each day.
Janice eventually started walking again and even running! The first time she started walking, her mom began crying and laughing because she was so happy and relieved. And it was obvious that Janice was feeling much better and was very happy as well.
“Me and Janice were probably the only two who believed that she could make it,” her mom told The Dodo. “Janice never gave up. She had this amazing spark in her.”
Janice was once in so much pain, but she never let it affect her and she was always such a trooper. She may have been little, but she was very brave. She was a fighter and never gave up on life. And in the end, it was all worth it.
Today, Janice is a happy and healthy goat. Her mom spoils her and she loves sitting on her lap and getting belly rubs. She lives in a big pasture with her new goat siblings and is enjoying life.
