Is it healthy to feed my cat a vegetarian diet?

No matter what your beliefs about being a vegetarian may be, they shouldn’t be extended onto your cat. There is a very good reason for this, as cats are what are known as obligate carnivores. Their entire system and metabolism is based on a strong need for meat in order to survive.

While some may argue that there is sufficient protein in soy or lentil products, the reality is that these plant-based products simply do not contain the right number of amino acids that your cat’s body needs in order to maintain optimal health. You can certainly add amino acid supplements to their vegetarian-based diet, but the results are unlikely to be successful> Tthose who attempt to put their cats on a vegetarian diet are likely to find themselves with a malnourished cat.

The system of a cat is simply not designed to effectively process lentils, soy products, and even grains to an extent. Many veterinarians recommend that cats be offered a grain- free commercial cat food that is rich in the meat-based proteins that cats need in order to be happy and healthy.

Some cats might be allergic to chicken or even fish, but these allergic reactions are so rare that it is very unlikely that your cat will have a food allergy to a type of meat protein in its food. In fact, while allergies in cats are somewhat rare, it is much more common to see a cat with an allergy to grain or soy than he is to a meat product.

Offer your cat a well-balanced diet that includes all of the meat-based proteins that het needs for his health and the shine of his coat.
