As a pet owner, one of the most frustrating things is coming home to a mess or damage caused by your furry friend. There’s not much that can be done at that point, except to put your pet in timeout for its behavior.

When Serena Costello got home from work to find not only damage from her pit bull, but also police officers and firefighters, she didn’t know what to think. Then, she learned that her dog, Sadie, had potentially saved her and her 4-year-old daughter’s lives.

Sadie was at home, where Serena has to “barricade” her to keep her from running outside on a daily basis, when she started scratching at the windowsill, front door, and backdoor of the house. Eventually, the pup was able to dislodge the wood stick that kept the sliding back door closed, and scratched her way to opening the door before escaping. Not only that, but the dog managed to get out of the backyard, where Serena also had an elaborate system in place to keep the pup contained.

Eventually, police got a call about a pit bull on the loose in the neighborhood and they found their way to Sadie. After a short chase with the pup back to her home, the police worked to get the dog back inside but quickly noticed the smell of gas upon entering the house.

According to Lieutenant Lawrence Rotta, the home smelled so strongly of gas there could have easily been an explosion had no one caught the leak. Which makes Sadie not only a good dog, but a hero.

Sadie’s heroism isn’t lost on Serena – who has no plans to punish the dog for the damage it did to the home – she told a local news station that this behavior is “so out of character” for the pup and that “she saved our lives”.
