2014 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards
If you’re a dog owner, you know that even just being there to greet you at the end of a long day is all it takes for your best (four-legged) friend to qualify as a hero. But sometimes, dogs take it a few steps further.
What are Hero Dogs?
Every year, the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards honors a handful of America’s outstanding Hero Dogs. What exactly does it take to be a Hero Dog? Well, as you might imagine, there are Hero Dogs of all kinds. The American Humane Association recognizes dogs who have shown heroism in all of the following categories: Law Enforcement Dogs; Arson Dogs; Service Dogs; Therapy Dogs; Military Dogs; Guide & Hearing Dogs; Search and Rescue Dogs; and Emerging Hero Dogs (for ordinary dogs who do extraordinary things or are just heroes to us). Twenty-four Semi-Finalists (three per category) are selected each year by the American public via online voting, and from those pooches, eight finalists are chosen (one per category) are selected by the public and a panel of judges. After that, it’s up to the public, and a special blue-ribbon celebrity judging panel to name the top American Hero Dog of 2014. All of the finalists are presented with a Hero Dog award for their feats of loyalty, bravery, and love, and earn a $1,500 donation to the charity partner of their choice. On top of that, one finalist will walk away with top honors as the winning American Hero Dog for 2014, securing an additional $5,000 for their charity partner.
