Couple Creates A Shelter That’s Doing Far More Than The Naked Eye Can See
Glenn Greenwald and his husband David Miranda have used their background in rescuing dogs to create something amazing.
More than three years ago, Greenwald rescued a senior dog name Mabel who was found on the side of the road in the middle of the Rio de Janeiro forest, injured and having a hard time walking.

Greenwald and Miranda already had seven dogs, but decided that adopting Mabel would be the best thing to do. But that number quickly doubled when they found out that Mabel was pregnant. They kept two of the puppies, and kept the rest.
Ever since that experience, animal rescue and rights activism has played a very important role in Greenwald and Miranda’s lives. Today, they have 23 dogs! Plus, they have rescued, fostered, and adopted out many more.

In the past two years, the couple began working with homeless people who live on the streets with their pets. The bond between the homeless and their animals is extremely strong and inspiring.
“The compassion, empathy and self-sacrifice defining the relationship between those who are homeless and their pets is extraordinary,” Greenwald wrote. “It is difficult to explain how affecting it is to watch a hungry, homeless person receive a desperately needed meal and, without a second thought, instantly divide it in half to share it with their hungry dog or cat.”

Field of Vision
Greenwald and Miranda were inspired by this and came up with a type of animal shelter that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world. The shelter is very similar to other shelters in the sense that they will rescue animals, provide them with shelter and medical care, and find them loving homes.
But what sets this shelter apart from all the others, is that this one will be staffed by homeless people who live on the streets with their pets, and demonstrate a strong love for animals in need.
