As the temperature drops, small critters will be heading for warmth. Lawn and pest chemicals can be lingering within reach. And seasonal mushrooms may carry potent toxins. There may not be danger around every corner, but there is still plenty to prepare for.

9. BARE BRANCHES

Once those leaves start to fall, exposed branches can be troublesome for a dog’s eyes and mouth if they play in the woods. An open field is much better for your pup to play around in.

Banfield Pet Hospital recommends securing branches in your own lawn, or otherwise blocking them from animal access.

8. CHEMICALS

Weed spray, pest killers, and all other dangerous chemicals should be kept out of your pets’ reach. When you are using potentially harmful products, pen your pooch up where it will be safe.

If your pet does come in contact with anything toxic, find the container it was stored in, contact your local veterinarian, and ask for further advice.

If you’ve got a compost bin, you should keep it covered. Better yet, fence it off. Toxins from rotting organic material can harm animals just as much as some chemicals can.

According to Reader’s Digest, possible pet deterrents for your garden and compost bin include orange peels, coffee grounds, vinegar, and even red pepper flakes sprinkled on tape.
