This baby Matschie’s tree kangaroo, who was born in August, is finally starting to come out of her mother’s pouch and explore the world around her. The birth of this kangaroo is a special one and extremely important to conservation efforts. The reason for this is because this is an endangered type of kangaroo with fewer than 2,500 left in the wild.

Watch her poke her adorable little face out of her mother’s pouch and start to make her way out of it. She doesn’t stay out for too long before going right back into her mama’s pouch. According to National Geographic, tree kangaroos remain in the pouch for about ten months. The mother will clean her pouch and groom the infant often during this phase. Once the infant initially leaves the pouch, like in this video, it will continue to return to it to nurse.
