Experts Warn That The Eastern Gorilla Is Just One Step Away From Extinction
The Eastern gorilla is facing a serious crisis as experts warn that the species could soon be extinct. With only an estimated 5,000 living creatures, the world’s largest gorilla could soon be a thing of the past unless something is done.
There are a number of reasons that have led to the dwindling numbers of Eastern gorillas in the wild. One of their largest populations were located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but the area has been prone to illegal hunting.
The species has been added to the critically endangered list and animal experts explain that people need to pay attention.
“A takeaway point we would like to emphasize is we are not journeying in the right direction with respect to species conservation,” said Carlo Rondinini, mammal assessment coordinator at Sapienza University of Rome. “We are losing species at a faster pace than we have ever done.”
