Don’t Drink and Meow: The Dangers of Alcohol to Cats

Proper FAP familypet_belowtitle

While humans and alcohol mix to desired results – or sometimes undesired –  animals and booze should never mix.  Giving any type of alcohol, even wine, can pose some serious danger to your feline. Some effects include:

  • Vomiting and diarrhea, leading to dehydration and kidney failure
  • Liver failure
  • Depression of the central nervous system
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Tremors and seizures
  • Coma

Sadly, if your kitty gets into the wine cellar, a result of alcohol poisoning may warrant your cat being euthanized or possibly lead to death. Monitoring your cat near wine and other liquors can prevent these instances from occurring. If any side effects occur, such as loss of coordination, struggle to keep balance, or stumbling, take your cat to see your local veterinarian in order to properly diagnose their condition. A vet’s treatment is dependant on the cat’s age, any previous health problems and the severity of the kitty’s intoxication.

The bottom line is: party sober with your cat, and if you cannot do so, keep an eye on your furry feline so they can enjoy the party, too.
