After Spending Half Her Life In Animal Shelter, Senior Pit Bull Is Finally Adopted
It’s hard to be a shelter pet, especially if you’re an older dog, who are adopted with less frequency than puppies. The odds get even worse if you’re a pit bull, pit bull mix or even look like a pit bull. Then studies show you’ll probably reside in the shelter three times longer than other canines, thus running a higher risk of euthanasia.
Such breed discrimination explains how Sandi, a 12-year-old pit bull/boxer mix, came to languish for 2,461 days in an Indiana shelter. Fortunately, the Marion-Grant Humane Society has a no-kill policy, otherwise this sweet girl would almost certainly have been euthanized by now.
“Everyone thinks pit bulls are bad and they’re not, they’re one of the most amazing dogs that I’ve had and owned myself,” Christy Bernadin, who sits on the shelter’s board, told WTHR.
Even so, Sandi – described by volunteers as a “sassy, treat-loving, couch potato – has spent the past six years watching other dogs find forever homes. Her extended stay has also earned more shelter street cred than any paid worker. “She’s been here longer than any employee we have,” Bernadin said.
But finally — after spending half of her life in the shelter — Sandi has found her forever family eager, and they’re eager to shower the senior with love and affection in her twilight years. Staff threw their oldest resident a going-away party filled with hugs, tears, and plenty of treats to celebrate her long-awaited adoption.
“We don’t give up. This is an orphanage. They will live their life out here,” Bernadin said. “We don’t put animals down, we keep them ’til they’re adopted or ’til the end of their life.”
