When animals are involved in hoarding situations, the outcome is often ugly, but there can be a silver lining.

Matted fur, behavioral issues, disease, and even serious injuries are a common site for rescuers called to handle such cases. In Birmingham, U.K., the RSPCA was called to a home with several dozen dogs.

Initially expecting 30, they found 82 chihuahuas in the crowded home, some of them skirting around the body of their dead owner, and many of them cowering in fear.

“Nacho” was rescued from a hoarding situation in 2017.

The oldest of the 82 dogs was 4 years old when they were rescued, but many of them were still puppies. Their future is much brighter now, and for least one of those puppies, comes with a new name attached,

Along with his 81 family members, Nacho was rescued by the RSPCA in April 2017, though his story didn’t come to light until a British reality show uncovered it the following year. Upon arrival to the RSPCA Newbrook Farm Animal Hospital in Birmingham, an inspector from Stoke-on-Trent bonded with Nacho, Metro reports, and told some relatives about him.

“She had seen them that week and thought we might be interested,” the inspector’s mother-in-law, Mandy, told Metro. “We saw a few different dogs and they all broke my heart. They seemed so frightened and confused.”

Nacho seemed like a wonderful fit for the family. And, indeed he was, though that name would have to go.

Now Nacho is called “Sherlock” and lives with a Labrador named Dr Watson and two cats, Moriarty and Mycroft.

Arriving at his new home, Nacho, now Sherlock, was introduced to a few other furry family members, a Labrador named Dr Watson and two cats, Moriarty and Mycroft.

‘He is absolutely adorable,’ Mandy said. ‘Sherlock and Dr Watson have become best buddies, it’s lovely. ‘And we’re absolutely besotted – he even sleeps between us in the bed at night!’

Sherlock is happy in his new home, and much healthier, considering the conditions he was previously subjected to. Many of his siblings from the hoarding situation in 2017 have been adopted out, as well.

“It’s really sad not only for the dogs but for the people too,” Mandy said. “We didn’t think we had a hole in our lives but we must have done because Nacho has absolutely filled it!” Mandy added.
