Rescue Bunny And Pigeon Break Divide To Snuggle Together, And Have Been Inseparable Ever Since
The Kildare Animal Foundation Wildlife Unit in Ireland took in an orphaned rabbit in early August. The bunny was so young that his umbilical cord was still attached. They didn’t think he’d survive because of how weak and unstable he was, and a seizure caused him to have an unsteady gait. But the rabbit overcame each and every obstacle and grew stronger and stronger each day.
A couple of weeks later, rescuers at the foundation received a call about another animal that needed help. A woman found a pigeon’s nest on the ground, with a newly hatched chick and an unhatched egg. The egg was cold and no longer viable, but the chick seemed to be just fine despite the fall.
The rescue took the baby chick in without hesitation, but then came across a problem. Both the baby chick and the bunny needed an incubator, but they only had one. They thought long and hard about it before ultimately deciding to put both babies in the incubator at the same time, and place a divide between them to keep them separated.
“Both babies fed and settled down well,” the foundation wrote. “Imagine our foster carer’s surprise when she next checked them and discovered that the divide had been overcome and these two had decided that life together was better than life apart.”
The rabbit, named Bunny, and the pigeon, named Pidg, are growing bigger each day but remain by each other’s side. Bunny is starting to hop more and more, while Pidg has grown much bigger and now has feathers where he once had fuzz.
When both animals are big and strong enough, they will be released back into the wild, but for now they will continue to enjoy life together at the foundation.
“The comfort of two heartbeats together, of companionship, has crossed the species divide,” the rescue wrote. “They are simply two little babies, finding comfort and warmth in each other’s company.”
