New Jersey Shelter Dog Finally Gets Adopted After Waiting Nearly 7 Years

For nearly seven years a shelter dog named Brooklyn patiently waited for someone to choose her. Thanks to social media, a couple heard her story and adopted her.

Brooklyn spent most of her life in a kennel at Hamilton Township Animal Shelter & Adoption Center in New Jersey. She recently experienced what life would be like in a home when a man offered to foster her. She spent the past six weeks going for walks, playing fetch, and cuddling on the couch.

The shelter recently posted a plea on Facebook for someone to come forward to foster her so she wouldn’t have to return to the shelter.

“Help us find a foster for this beautiful girl, so she doesn’t have to return to the shelter. Brooklyn has spent close to 7 years in the shelter and now that she’s spent the past 6 weeks in a foster home 🏠, we don’t want to crush her spirit by making her return to her same lonely kennel run.”

A few days earlier, the shelter posted an urgent need for a foster and explained what the perfect home for Brooklyn would be. “Brooklyn needs a quiet home, with a dog-savvy person. She is very selective with people and needs a home without children or frequent visitors. Brooklyn deserves a chance to have a life that doesn’t involve her living in a shelter. Please help us help her.”

Even though the adorable dog is selective with who she trusts, “once you are ‘Brooklyn-approved’, you are friends for life,” wrote the shelter.

The community shared her story and when a couple came across it they contacted the shelter to set up a meet and greet. It was a success! Good things are said to come to those who wait and Brooklyn was rewarded with a loving home.

Brooklyn was finally adopted and the shelter staff couldn’t be happier. “It took 2,536 days, but this beautiful girl has finally been adopted! 🥰 Thank you to everyone involved in making this dream come true. It takes a village – from the volunteers, staff, her foster dad, and everyone who shared her all over social media.”
