Banana Joe is Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show’s Best In ShowFamilyPet
I don’t know about you, but I enjoy watching the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show! I have never owned a purebred dog, as I almost always have had dogs from shelters or different rescue situations. But I love seeing all the different breeds. While it isn’t a comprehensive showing of all dogs, I find it very interesting. Here is some information on the show and the 2013 Westminster Dog Show winner, “Banana Joe,” an Affenpinscher.
Established in 1877, and first held on May 8th of that year, The Westminster Kennel Club is America’s oldest organization dedicated to the sport of purebred dogs. The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is a two-day show that takes place at Madison Square Garden in New York every year. It was initiated by hunters that met routinely at the Westminster Hotel in Manhattan. They created a kennel club in order to hold a dog show that originally was meant just for gun dogs such as Setters and Pointers.
Entry & Judging
The club allows the top five dogs of each breed to be entered before the complete 2,500 dogs are signed up. The winning dog is known as “America’s Dog” for the next year. The dog goes on a media tour on the day following the show starting with television network morning shows, etc.
Each breed of dog has a certain standard, a written description of the ideal example of the breed that the dogs are judged on. Standards include specifications from form to function, the performance of the job the dog was bred to do, and includes details such as coat, color, eye shape, and more.
During the day, dogs are judged in their breed categories, and the Best of Breed (BOB) advances to its appropriate group. There are seven groups: Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, and Herding. The group competitions are held nightly over the course of the show. The seven winners advance to compete for the Best in Show.
