Trucker Slams The Brakes When He Spots It On The Roadside. Now The Police Are Begging For Help

Keeping your eyes on the road is a key component of safe driving, but it can be equally important to keep your eyes peeled for anything strange. This was the experience of a truck driver who noticed two dogs thrown from a dark blue Dodge Durango heading north towards Cortland, New York.

The trucker immediately pulled over to attend to these badly-injured animals as the driver sped off, and then called the police. Though one dog managed to survive with relatively minor abrasions, the second dog’s leg was mangled badly enough to warrant an emergency amputation. Police are still searching for the person or people who committed this cruel act.

“These animals have been through a lot, and people need to understand that this is not OK,” said Amberly Ondria, a shelter manager at the Broome County Humane Society. “This is not something that should be done,” she said. The truck driver, Adam, was similarly outraged.

Officers did their best to administer medical care – including a splint — on the side of the highway, then wrapped both dogs in blankets and sweatshirts. The dogs were later named Trooper and Adam after the first responders.

Though Trooper — the dog with the crushed leg believed to 6 to 8 years old — faces a long road to recovery, he’s also slowly moving around on three legs, which is a good sign.

“Although a bit unsteady, and only moving a short distance, it is very obvious that he is determined,” The Humane Society posted on Facebook. The younger dog, Adam, is thought to be only a year old.

“Thank you to EVERYONE for your prayers, kind words, generous donations and sharing this story!” The Humane Society continued. “It is because of all of you that we can get Trooper and Adam the level and quality of care that they need and deserve. Words cannot describe how tremendous people are and how everyone is rallying for these dogs!”

The group also urged readers to share this story online, which might help police catch whomever perpetrated this horrific act. “I sincerely hope the dash cam of Adam’s truck can bring justice for these poor babies,” an angry commentator wrote.

“And Adam [the trucker] has expressed his wishes of adopting both of them. He has already proven he has a big heart and these pups would have an amazing life with him. Please let that happen too.”
