Longtime Shelter Cat Starts To Come Out Of Her Shell Thanks To Donated Felt Snakes
Shelters can be a scary and stressful place for cats and dogs. Some will act out by barking while others will cower in the corner of their cage. This type of environment makes it hard for pets to show off their amazing personalities which leads to many being passed by.
One of the ways that shelters try and help animals relax is through toys and interaction with humans. Elk Grove Animal Services has a longtime shelter cat named Astra that has been waiting for a forever home since August. The shy tripod feline would not play or interact with people, but that all changed when a donation of cat toys arrived.

GreaterGood sent soft blankets, interactive toys, and vaccinations for the shelter pets – all thanks to your donations. The shelter pets were so excited to receive their new toys and goodies, but none were as thrilled by the felt snakes as Astra. She started to move and play with the new toys, which shocked and delighted the staff.

Koreena Walsh with Elk Grove Animal Services told us, “Astra is our longest cat resident and has been here since August 23, 2019. She is a cancer survivor and amputee and it’s difficult to encourage her to move around in her cage. But as soon as we got these felt snake toys from GreaterGoods, she came alive and she LOVES playing with them every single day. They have really helped her come out of her shell and we’re hoping that playfulness will get her adopted soon.”

Astra is a beautiful 7-year-old black cat that would love to find a loving family. If you are interested in adopting her you can call Elk Grove Animal Services at (916) 687-3042 and ask for information about animal ID number A015332.
Please consider adopting your next pet and don’t pass by the nervous ones.
You can help shelter pets by purchasing one or all of these items while they wait for their forever homes.
A cat or dog will be provided with a comfortable and joyful place at the shelter. When a rescue pet is healthy and happy their personality shines and they are more likely to be adopted into their new home. Together we change the world.
