An Arctic sled dog, the Alaskan Malamute is a vision of power, beauty and determination. Strength and endurance are additional traits that the Alaskan Malamute possesses. Many think that the Alaskan Malamute is a racing dog, but this is simply not the case. The Alaskan Malamute was primarily a sled dog and used to pull heavy sleds throughout cold areas, especially over long distances. These days, it’s common to see the Alaskan Malamute as a prized member of one’s family. Loyal and loving, these dogs are quite popular, and it’s no wonder why when you see how well they interact with their family members.

The Alaskan Malamute takes on many different appearances. Their coats can be a wide variety of colors, but often range in scale from white to gray and black to reddish brown. The Alaskan Malamute stands between 23 and 25 inches tall at the shoulder and can weigh between 75 and 85 pounds. As a result of their large size, it is important to have sufficient space for your Alaskan Malamute to play and get exercise within the home and also outside.

The Alaskan Malamute is a great family dog as this breed is extremely loyal, fun and affectionate. Families lucky enough to have this type of dog in their home will find a pet who loves them as much as they love him. Their intelligent nature makes them quite willing to be trained and listen to commands. They learn quickly, especially via professional dog training, but may be a bit stubborn initially. It’s important to establish training early on, and is recommended that owners keep these dogs on task and enable them to listen to training commands.

Due to their lush coat, this breed needs continual grooming. Daily exercise will keep the Alaskan Malamute healthy and content.

With an Alaskan Malamute by your side, you will feel loved, secure and appreciated by your family companion.
