She Was Tied To A Pole And Resorted To Eating Rocks. Now, This Rescued Pup Is Living The Good Life

Tusk may live a happy and fulfilling life, but her owner, Amanda Forth, says it wasn’t always like that. In fact, it wasn’t until the dog was a senior that Forth adopted Tusk at a local animal rescue organization’s adoption event.

“I wasn’t looking to get a dog, but was walking to the farmers’ market in Santa Monica, stopped to look at the dogs who were outside at the weekly rescue pop-up, and it was love at first sight,” Forth told The Dodo. “I couldn’t let go of her — she was too sweet.”

You might notice Tusk’s unusual appearance. Her tongue constantly hangs out of her mouth because she has only one tooth left in her mouth. The single tooth is a reminder of the life she once lived.

Several years ago, Tusk was found tied to a Los Angeles fence post. She was extremely malnourished and was so hungry, she had resorted to eating rocks off of the ground. She ultimately lost her teeth as a result of eating the hard pebbles. Fortunately, volunteers from the Much Love Animal Rescue came across the dog and knew they couldn’t leave it die. Tusk was taken in and nursed back to health. Besides losing her teeth, Tusk also had a severe infection in her uterus and had to undergo surgery. The small dog quickly healed and was placed up for adoption. The rest is history.

That was 11 years ago and Forth said Tusk has grown into the perfect pet.

“She is gentle, calm and loves to cuddle but is also very independent,” Forth said. “She makes almost no noise and averages at one to two barks per month.”

There is one thing that Forth says is unique about Tusk: her love for food.

“Tusk loves to eat,” Forth said. “Although a mere six pounds, she would eat the food necessary for an 80-pound dog if she could.”

Despite only having one tooth, Tusk enjoys all the treats she can get her paws on.

“She loves to gnaw on carrots,” Forth said. “She will carry a whole giant carrot in her mouth and go find a private space to gnaw on the carrot for an hour with her tusk.”

Tusk’s story has been shared around the world. You can keep up with her latest adventures on her Instagram page.
