This Ohio Shelter Designed New Rooms To Help Make Lonely Dogs There Feel At HomeAshley Maisano
Life can be extremely scary and lonely for shelter dogs. Many of them are in loud, small kennels, and some wait months or even years to be adopted. Until then, they may never know what it feels like to be at home.
One shelter in Ohio found a way to change this. The Toledo Area Humane Society has designed rooms for their dogs that look and feel like a forever home.
This gives the pups a chance to get out of their cramped kennel and feel more comfortable in what they call their “Real Life Room.”
“We basically took an office here and turned it into a living room,” a shelter staffer told The Dodo. “We have a recliner, a rug, some pillows and a TV. One of the best things is the lamp we put in there. That means we can turn off the florescent lights and have more soothing lighting in the room.”
To some, it may look like just an ordinary room, but to shelter dogs it is a taste of normalcy and comfort.
It’s only been a few weeks since the shelter has designed these rooms, and it’s already helping dogs find real forever homes.
When the dogs stay in these rooms, it helps staff determine their personalities better and how they’ll act in real homes. Several of the dogs who have gone in them, have been adopted shortly after walking out.
