They Fell In Love When They Met, Then Got Separated. But What’s Meant To Be Always Finds It’s Way…Ashley Maisano
Just as two humans can form a close and special bond with each other, dogs can as well. An older dog named Caesar and a puppy named Saskia fell in love with each other, but their hearts were shattered when they were pulled apart, not knowing if they’d ever see each other again.
Before the pups met, they lived in different parts of Blikkiesdorp, a township in Cape Town, South Africa. Life in Blikkiesdorp is not a one of luxury; some of Cape Town’s poorest people live here and the town is filled with gang violence, making it a very dangerous place to live.
Three South African women there, Rosie Kunneke, Dinielle Stockigt and Clarina Hanekom, wanted to do something about all of the animal suffering that they’ve seen in Blikkiesdorp, so they founded Tin Can Town, an organization that offers life-saving animal services to dogs and cats. The organization neuters and spays, offers veterinary care and provides food. They are on the clock 24/7 and always willing to lend a helping hand to an animal in need.
One day, Kunneke was out im Blikkiesdorp during one of their outreach days when she came across Caesar. From that point on, whenever he heard their car, he would always come running to greet them. He lived with a couple in a nearby shack and was extremely skinny, so they always brought him food and provided him with vet care.
His humans wound up breaking up, and Caesar stayed with the woman, who apparently didn’t take good care of him. One day, kids in the neighborhood threw rocks at him, wounding his head and his nose. Since Caesar was ten years old, Kunneke feared that he wouldn’t live much longer if he stayed in this horrible place. She took him and put him in foster care to recover.
Meanwhile, a four-month-old puppy named Saskia from a nearby part of Blikkiesdorp also needed their help. She was severely emaciated and had gastroenteritis. It was crucial that she received medical attention right away. Once they got her back to good health, they went to bring her to her owners but wound up at an empty lot. It was clear to Hanekom that the owners gave her the wrong address because they didn’t want the puppy.
Saskia eventually ended up at the same foster that Caesar was in. For Saskia and Caesar, it was love at first sight. The two became inseparable and followed each other everywhere. They played together, ate together, and even slept in the same dog bed.
The time finally came for Caesar to move into his furever home. A retired couple in Cape Town adopted him and provided him with more love than he has ever received. Although Caesar was happy to be in a new, permanent home, he had left his best friend behind.
Saskia was heartbroken without Caesar. She grew extremely depressed and didn’t even want to play. She would just lie in her bed where she and Caesar used to sleep together. She was always looking around the house for him, but had no idea where her best friend had gone. They tried finding her a furever family too, but had no luck.
A few months later, Caesar’s adoptive parents reached back out to Tin Can Town to adopt a friend for Caesar. They said that Caesar seemed depressed and they wanted to get a companion for him. As fate would have it, Saskia was still looking for a furever home. They brought Saskia to Caesar’s new home, and they recognized each other instantly. They wagged their tails, licked each other, and then took a nap together in the same bed.
They knew they had to adopt Saskia so that the two could always be together. They have been inseparable ever since! It is always a wonderful thing to see rescue dogs finding new homes, but for these two to find one together is so heartwarming!
