How To Make A Dog Toy From Old T-Shirts

Toys and play are important facets of a happy and healthy life for your dog, but let’s face it: dog toys can be expensive and it can be more than a little painful to watch that pricey toy ripped to shreds in ten seconds, flat, by your overzealous dog.

Of course, each dog is different, but if you’ve been cursed blessed with a pooch that tends to be really rough on their toys, why not consider making your own from stuff you already have in your house? It’s simple to do, saves you money and is a great way to live a little bit greener. Here’s a quick and easy way to make a dog toy out of old t-shirts.

What you’ll need:

  • clean t-shirts
  • sharp scissors

Steps:

  1. Cut t-shirts into 2 to 3-inch wide strips. (I cut along the side seams of the shirts, first, then cut strips, width-wise).
  2. Gather a group of strips (I used 9 strips, but you can use as many as you’d like) and tie into a knot on one end.
  3. Separate the strips into three equal bunches and braid. Tie off the other end when finished braiding. (Or, you can just tie knots along the length, if you don’t wish to braid.)
  4. Trim the ends of the toy to uniform lengths and hand over to your dog for some playtime!

This is a super easy and quick way to turn something old into something new, useful and fun and it’s an activity that everyone in the family can get involved with — even the kids! If you have a lot of old shirts to part with, consider making a great big collection of these t-shirt toys and dropping them off to your local animal shelter. The shelter pups will enjoy their new toys and you will enjoy the extra space in your closet or dresser! Does your dog “kill” their toys, or play nicely with them? Have you ever DIY-ed dog toys?
