Dog Whose Tongue And Ears Were Cut Off For Dog-Fighting Uses His Abusive Past To Help OthersAshley Maisano
Hooch the French Mastiff had a horribly rough start to life. He was rescued three years ago by Marley’s Mutts in California. They were shocked and horrified to discover that someone had cut out his tongue and chopped off his ears. Amy Klein from Marley’s Mutts believes that Hooch could have possibly been abused to prepare him to be a bait dog in a dog-fighting ring.
Needless to say, having a tongue is extremely important. For dogs, tongues are crucial to help them pant to keep cool. Without a tongue, Hooch also couldn’t eat properly which caused him to be 40 pounds underweight. Marley’s Mutts started out by feeding Hooch with a feeding tube to get his weight back up, and eventually soaked his dog food and fed it to him by hand. To drink, he would dunk his whole head in his water bowl to take in liquids.
Due to his abusive past, Hooch was terrified of people. But with the love of rescuers, he is now a very friendly and affectionate dog. He has also gained his weight back and is now a whopping 93 pounds! Not only is he in good health, but he has been adopted by Zach Skow, the founder of Marley’s Mutts.
Skow and Hooch work together to help others in their community. Hooch volunteers regularly for local organizations where he helps children with autism and the homeless who need some companionship. His paw-some work has earned him the Emerging Heroes Award from the American Humane Association! Watch Hooch in the video below:
