At just four weeks old, this adorable little puppy, named Gem, was abused by someone in a northern Ontario community, and suffered a severe spinal injury, causing her to lose movement in both rear legs.

A woman named Ella heard about this cruel treatment and rescued Gem. Paws For Love, a dog rescue in Thunder Bay, Ontario, paid for Gem’s flight to come to their place.

Despite how horribly she had been treated in the first few weeks of her life, she was still in good spirits and wagged her tail when she came in. They weren’t sure if she’d ever be able to fully walk again, but they knew that it would be a long road to recovery if they were going to achieve that.

They gave her many x-rays, acupuncture, chiropractic procedures and a plethora of veterinary treatments. They also fit her for a special mechanical wheelchair that allowed her to pull herself on her front legs.

But they knew there was more that could be done for sweet little Gem. From there, she went to Carter’s Forever Rescue & Sanctuary in Bracebridge, Ontario. Gem continues on her long journey to recovery, but is having fun in the meantime. She is getting used to her wheelchair, and now she runs outside just like any other dog would.

Aside from Gem making progress toward being able to walk again, it is also great that Gem will always feel LOVE and will never have to worry about being abused ever again!
