When Kelly, a volunteer from Vet Ranch, was walking through a shelter, she stumbled upon an interesting site. A 5-week-old puppy was having a seizure! Kelly did the only thing that she could; she took the pup from the shelter and brought him to Dr. Karri of Vet Ranch. Upon his arrival, Dr. Karri discovered that this adorable little pup (whom they named Fawkes) had a high temperature and was going in and out of consciousness. These two symptoms coupled with his seizures could be caused by various different illnesses, some as simple as anemia and others that were more complicated such as a liver shunt! So after getting her newest little patient set up with an IV filled with fluids, Dr. Karri decided to figure out what was wrong with Fawkes the old fashioned way: trial and error.

Dr. Karri created a list of all the things she could think of that would be behind Fawkes’ symptoms and then proceeded to test Fawkes for every single one of them. After blood tests, stool tests, x-rays, and a surgery, Dr. Karri ruled out almost everything on her list! With not much to go on, the only thing that Dr. Karri was able to do was give Fawkes a range of medicines that would treat his symptoms, and hopefully time would heal this beautiful little boy.

Despite Dr. Karri’s initial fear that Fawkes wouldn’t live very long, he began to thrive. He slowly started eating more and was becoming much more responsive and active! And though, Dr. Karri was unable to determine exactly what was wrong with Fawkes to begin with, he has begun to act like the mischievous puppy he was meant to be!
