Apple Valley Animal Shelter in California was given quite a scare when they thought a burglar was in their building. Staff was called out regarding multiple alarms going off and it was reported that the intruder was moving through the shelter very quickly.

When staff arrived, they saw a mess in the lobby. Phones, papers and files were all knocked off the front counter, but they couldn’t find the culprit. Then, they noticed one of the dogs was missing from the adoption kennels in the back of the shelter. They checked the security cameras to see if the intruder who came in stole the dog too.

The surveillance video answered all of their questions, but the footage was shocking. It turns out that the missing German Shepherd was not stolen, and that there was, in fact, no intruder at all. The dog got herself out of her kennel, and made her way through not one, but THREE doors to escape the shelter; one of those doors even had a handle that needs to be turned in order to open. What a smart dog!

The dog, named Ginger, was found and is now back at the shelter awaiting her forever home. Ginger ended up at the shelter in the first place when her owner had become homeless. He wanted the best for her and didn’t want to subject her to the streets.

“We would love someone who works with German shepherds to adopt her and train her for an important job,” Gina Whiteside, director of the shelter, told People Pets. “She is brilliant.”
