His Beloved Lab Was Diagnosed With Cancer, So He Decided To Take Her On The Road Trip Of A Life TimeAshley Maisano
Robert Kugler received the news that no pet owner wants to hear, his beloved chocolate lab, Bella, has cancer. She had bone cancer and eventually one of her legs had to be amputated, but now it has spread to her lungs and became terminal. Instead of moping around and being sad, Kugler decided to take Bella on the road trip of a life time.
Kugler adopted Bella nine years ago when she was just a puppy and isn’t ready to let her go. Their road trip has so far included visiting a mural in Detroit, sight-seeing at Niagara Falls, watching the sunset over Lake Erie, and so much more. They still have many more places to visit during their road trip, but Kugler wouldn’t rather be traveling with anyone else but Kugler. “This is one of the biggest connections I’ve ever had to another living being,” Kugler told CNN. “I don’t care that it’s a dog.”
Doctors gave Bella three to six months left to live last year, but has survived much longer than that. But Kugler wants to cherish every moment with her, because he never knows when it’ll be her last. “Some days I’m completely prepared,” Kugler told CNN. “I pictured her just swimming out to sea. But there’s other days when I’m like, oh my God, I can’t bear the thought of it.”
But when that heartbreaking moment comes, Kugler will be right by Bella’s side, just like he has been for the last nine years. When Bella passes, Kugler said he will volunteer more, like he has in the past for organizations that help veterans, since he is a military veteran himself.
Kugler believes we should all take some life tips from Bella: “Wag more, bark less.” Watch more about their story in the video below:
